Don Anderson recalls growing up in the country and having to travel by horse and wagon. His family lived in a home with no electricity or running water. Don was drafted into the army when he turned eighteen. Don was a member of the Infantry. His unit deployed overseas and entred the Battle of the Bulge. But, due to a lazy eye, Don did not pass his overseas exam and was sent to Florida to work guarding prisoners of war who worked in the cane fields. Don says he thought his life had been spared. Many of the eighteen year olds that Don had trained with were killed overseas. After returning home, Don and his brother worked with the Veterans Farmer Training Program. Eventually, Don went back to school and became an Agriculture teacher.
